What
makes the band so great is adjustability. The expandable end
of the system (around the stomach tissue) is inflatable; the
gastric band can be inflated or deflated, to narrow or widen
the passage of food from the “new small stomach”
to the normal stomach. This adjustment is performed according
to time, weight loss, medical recommendation or patient desire.
If the band is tightened, the person will experience faster
weight loss and still be satisfied, and if its loosened, the
patient is able to tolerate more food. The radiopaque port
is placed out of the abdominal cavity, in the adipose tissue
of the abdominal wall; it is visualized with fluoroscopy for
adjustment purposes. A kink-resistant tube is used to connect
the inflatable section to the access port. |
|
|
| When patient
desires a band adjustment, it is important to be asymptomatic.
Symptoms suggesting esophagitis or gastritis, like: difficult
swallowing, reflux, heartburn or shoulder pain (just to mention
the most common), need treatment prior to the procedure. Otherwise,
these symptoms could worsen after the adjustment. That is why;
you should inform your surgeon about symptoms whne schedduling
your band adjustment.
Band adjustment is more effective when patients follow the
nutritionist indications. Some patients dont experience the
results that are hoping because wrong food selection. A person
may eat only soft and liquid foods, but still eat 2000 or
more calories a day, food consistency is not equivalent to
food calories, think about milkshakes, excessively sweet coffee,
caloric soft drinks and mashed potatoes, add to this the hughe
portions being served in most restaurants. Band adjustment
will bring better results when the patient selects food according
to his goal and stops eating when satisfied.
When is time for band adjustment, patient and physician should
consired the possibility of a change in the possition of the
chamber or port, this a a result of abdominal fat thining
secondary to weight loss. To avoid multiple pokes to access
the port, and to visualize the esophagus, stomach reservoir,
gastric band and stomach, the adjustment should only be performed,
asisted with fluoroscopy. The way most experienced surgeons
do, for the patients safe and confort.
Contact Obesity choices if you are interested in fluoroscopy
asisted band adjustment. Meanwhile, find below some suggestions
you can follow if you are experiencing the “weight loss
plateau”. You may even practice them before and/or after
your adjustment. |
